    Forrest GRUMP
Tom Hanks stands tall as one of the most accomplished and beloved actors of any era. He has played everything from Colonel Tom Parker to Mister Rogers to Walt Disney. He even shines when playing an unlikeable character like he does in this film. Otto is someone that you will hate to love but you will. Yes he is a miserable grouch throughout the majority of the film but we see the demons of his life that have embittered him, the loss of his baby and the terrible accident that paralyzed his wife and finally her death. He is on the edge of despair. The dark humor of the film is that on four different occasions he tries to take his life only to have it backfire each time (in one of the cases he inadvertently becomes a hero!). I didn't know any of the other actors in the film from that eccentric family to the trans student to that elderly African American couple but they all did a great job and created a fine, although often depressing film. SPOILER Alert some have compared this film to Gran Torino and it is similar because Hanks character dies in the end but they say you never die as long as you are loved and remembered and he certainly is by those whose lives he touched in the end so ultimately this is a story of glorious redemption made even more special by the unique wonderful talent of Tom Hanks.

Desperately needs a warning for suicide content
This is a beautiful piece of work, but is nothing like the trailer. It's not the sweet, charming, lighthearted tale of a cranky man and his neighbours. It's about a man, mourning his late wife and whose repeated suicide attempts in an effort to join her in their double grave are thwarted by annoying interruptions by neighbours.

It is incredibly triggering for anyone struggling with depression or mental health issues, and their families. The focus on death, depression, mourning, and (most of all) the recurrent, vividly depicted suicide attempts, make it an agonising watch. I recommend any cinema or streaming service include a warning before screening the film, along with helpline information. Any person in an emotionally vulnerable state should avoid watching this movie.
