view_and_review - 22 June 2024 I'm Too Used to Old Movies Most of the movies I watch are black & white. I spend most of my movie watching time watching early-30's films when horror was a very rare genre. There were movies like Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, and a few others, but they were nothing like the horrors of today. As a result, I get excited more than I should when I flip back to the present day horrors.
The release date of "The Nun II" was five years after "The Nun," but the activities that take place in "The Nun II" are only three years later.
"The Nun II" takes place in 1956 in Tarascon, France. The demon that Father Burke (Demian Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) thought they'd vanquished had actually remained loose. It hitched a ride in Maurice (Jonas Bloquet), the guide from part one. Maurice was unwittingly possessed and he carried the malevolent being from Romania to France.
This time the demonette (that would be female demon) was looking for "the eyes of Saint Lucy," a powerful relic that would give it immeasurable power. Once again, Sister Irene Palmer was sent to stop it. She wouldn't have Father Burke to help her this time though, instead she had a nun padawan named Debra (Storm Reid).
Maybe I'm not the best judge, but I liked "The Nun II." It was chilling, kept me on edge, and delivered with the scares. I warily went to sleep right after watching it and had nightmares. Not every scary movie gives me nightmares.
Free on Max.
FieCrier - 31 March 2024 none too original I'd enjoyed the first one. I've generally enjoyed The Conjuring universe despite having nothing but contempt for the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren.
This one was pretty dull. The look of it is OK. Still find Taissa Farmiga mesmerizing and wish the film gave her more to do emotionally. Lame jump scares and uninspired CGI. The idea of the newsstand magazines flipping pages was kind of cool but even that just felt digital and it might've been really memorable had it been accomplished with practical effects as I am sure could have been possible.
Much of the movie is set at a girls' school that is gargantuan in size but that has relatively few students present, and portions that are in decaying disuse. There's a basement full of scores of wine casks from when it had been a monastery that made wine. Somehow the girls avoid sneaking down all the time for a nip. However, the eventual use for the wine you'll see coming from miles away - it's repeatedly telegraphed.
The way a relic is hidden is... odd. Doesn't seem like a devoted Catholic would have done that.
Here's hoping the religious concept of the trinity doesn't in any way encourage them to make a third film.
