gliderguy - 16 April 2024 Change the Channel Time This movie was billed as a "coming of age" film. Unfortunately, the main character Paul Graff (Banks Repeta) never comes of age and remains stuck in his aimless life. The best part of the film is Anthony Hopkins performance as the loving grandfather, but that, by itself, is not enough to save this dreadful bore of a film. This film is, apparently, a recreation of the director's, James Gray, childhood. It makes me feel sorry for him, but not sorry enough to recommend this dog. The central character gets associated with a held-over juvenile delinquent who exerts a negative influence, including doing drugs in the restroom. The movie goes downhill from there and seems to end when they ran out of film to continue.

Quite frankly it was a mess, it presented as a coming of age story set in the 1980's, but the young boy never came of age or grew up, there was just no direction of travel or any character development. The way everyone was at the start of the movie was exactly the same at the end.
We had a tissue thin story that just elicited no emotional response from the viewer, I really didn't like anyone they were mostly all horrible.
In terms of themes we had some elements of striving for the American dream but the main overarching theme that was approached from several angles again and again was "othering". Somehow there were meant to elements of similarly in the predicaments of displaced Jewish settlers and black people, this was insulting naive in the extreme.
The music grated, the camerawork pedestrian, the acting predictable, etc etc. I'm giving this mess a 3 outta 10, the young acting playing the lead displayed some commitment to the role.
