An enjoyable and well-acted musical interpretation of the classic Alice Walker novel...
I went into this movie musical looking a bit askance at how anyone could improve on the original 1985 Steven Spielberg film, so brilliant in nearly every way, or Alice Walker's seminal 1982 novel, and I also wasn't sure if the subject matter would work for a musical. I'm happy to say I was wrong and I enjoyed this much more than I expected. I've loved Fantasia Barrino since "American Idol" and she was great in her feature film debut, as was Danielle Brooks (who is fantastic in "Orange is the New Black") as Sophia and Taraji P. Henson as Shug. Colman Domingo, who we saw recently in "Rustin", was a sensation in his role, further cementing his reputation as an actor to watch. The movie is beautifully filmed and sensitively told, and while its set-pieces give away its genesis as a stage musical, it's transferred to film well, with serviceable and mostly pleasing songs and an uplifting message of hope and resilience. If you haven't seen this, you should slot it in for a feel-good movie musical matinee some Sunday afternoon at home.

    I've always been fascinated by filmmakers . . .
. . . who tackle the task of making a picture about a color. Unfortunately, I have not been able to view very many of these myself, since many such flicks date back to the 1800's or 1900's, and are not available on my streaming service. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE sounds like a real treat, because I love nearly anything orange flavored, whether it's a pop, a shake, a cone or a smoothie. YELLOW SUBMARINE also makes me curious. I've heard the song a few times, and it makes the movie version sound intriguing. I started to watch REDS, but I dozed off because there was too much talking and not enough action. However, I stayed wide awake for all of THE COLOR PURPLE, as there was always a rousing dance around the next corner. It's enough to make Herald give up crayons.
