Tasked with extracting a family who is at the mercy of a Georgian gangster, Tyler Rake infiltrates one of the world's deadliest prisons in order to save them. But when the extraction gets hot, and the gangster dies in the heat of battle, his equally ruthless brother tracks down Rake and his team to Sydney, in order to get revenge.

    Excellent but...and it's a big but
    On it's way to a perfect 10 the last third soils it all. Entitled and ungrateful characters ruined it for me - I wanted to just switch it off after 90 minutes. Why would anyone take such optional colossal risks, and mostly believable if you're highly trained, to be rewarded with blah blah arrogance. On almost every level you're rooting for the hero/heroine's, then it's diaper time, when gratitude takes an inexplicable walk and they get a scolding? What? It's the endless "licence revoked", "mission impossible disavowed";etc - this movie avoided all the macho tropes, but seems to want to satisfy a goody two shoes finale. Well of course, fighting to the death is the easy bit, I forgot.

    A good movie if you cut out half an hour at least

    A huge step down, but the first one was decent and fun enough for the runtime but never great, so the expectations were not big. But it gets to a point where it's more obnoxious than good. Heck, at the 1:10 mark you already feel the movie was maybe a tad long but still competent and fine. But this is a nearly a 1:50 movie. The last 40 minutes feel like a lifetime in some parts. The issue is that the movie slows down to a crawl way too much with melodramatic scenes like the lead talking about his dead son to his ex-wife. Do we really need this much drama in an action movie?

    The mob wife and her son are horrible actors here. They both look like they are just about to cry in every single scene. And it doesn't feel like it fits into a movie where the main characters otherwise are good and focused actors. Also, the best thing about the first movie was the anti-hero. Probably the best acting performance of the year and besides the action the only great thing in that movie. So what do we get instead? Just a predictable story and a dull mob boss. Which works fine when the action is good in the first hour of the movie. You enjoy the action not thinking too much about the stupid stuff. But then the movie starts to take itself extremely seriously focusing on drama and slow and even slow-motion drama scenes. That's dull.

    I cannot recommend it. There is nothing new here. No new story, the action is good but camera work quite terrible with shakes and fast cuts. And overall it's gloomy and blue with no humor, light scenes, or fun action. Everything is dark and depressive. The action works, but at times feels dull because of this. The Gray Man (2022) is the movie you should watch instead. It does something like this where it focuses on action over story. But that movie is creative at all times and doesn't take itself extremely seriously. Yet it's the same big city fight stuff and big explosions. And frankly this movie is quite engaging at times for sure, it's just that I don't take anything away from it and now feel gloomy myself. It's a dark and macabre story that doesn't fit the action setting.
