    A delightful surprise
I brought the DVD with an open mind. I'm a real movie fan, hard to please but that into consideration the work it takes to entertain and I respect that. What can I say? The movie, the direction was almost Alfred Hitchcockian with creative camera effects. The actors did an outstanding job, I can see they cared about the delivery of their skills. Look I'm a big guy, horror movies for me are usually something for laughs, I never even flinch, but not with "Smile" it'll catch you off guard like it did me, the movie isn't predictable like I thought it would be, from the first smile, you'll see what I mean.

    Scary, well-shot, but not outstanding
There are several very good special effects and scares, although the filmmakers oftentimes end up relying on usual jumpscares to drive them home, in my opinion unnecessarily so. The film shines moreso in its first and final acts; it struggles at points to maintain my interest in the second. With that being said, I enjoy Smile and think it's worth the watch for horror fanatics such as myself. There are many great camera shots and transitions that caught my eye. The metaphor of overcoming past trauma and guilt is decent, but does not really stand out to me over most other films that comment on it. Rose's eerie descent into mania is performed fantastically by Sosie Bacon, even with dialogue that sometimes sounded strange, and although it is a very brief appearance I was impressed by Caitlin Stasey giving a horrifying performance to kickstart the story. Certainly not a horror classic, as it is somewhat derivative of past creations (namely It Follows and Truth or Dare), but you can tell that the people involved did care about this movie and it mostly delivered in the ways that a horror movie should. 7.5/10.
