The Bikeriders

After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy is inextricably drawn to Benny, the newest member of Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals led by the enigmatic Johnny. Much like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.

JUST ME & MY BIKE & THE OPEN ROAD...!
A current release now playing in theaters. If you ever wondered where bike gangs (or clubs) got that start you get an inkling in Jeff Nichols' (Loving/Midnight Special) latest. Being interviewed for a magazine/book story, Jodi Comer details how she met her man, Oscar nominee Austin Butler, after being dragged to a bar filled w/bikers who are there hanging out. Taken w/him right away she relates how quickly their courtship became (they married 5 weeks later) & how the extended bike club run by Oscar nominee Tom Hardy came into being more as a means of comradery than a force for illegal activities (I still remember one prominent New Jersey bike gang holding court outside my apartment window where they were packed like cockroaches) but as the years continue & the raison d'etre for the gang's being becomes murky (more initiates who join from out of state chapters start to bring in more problematic elements into the faction) makes Butler in particular wonder if why he joined up still holds true. More a mythical take on the freedom of the road via road hogs much like Easy Rider or The Wild One (a film humorously referenced here) before it, where the idea is the through-line rather some genre inflected take on the same material. Also starring Mike Faist (of the recent Challengers) playing the journo w/Michael Shannon (a Nichols regular), Boyd Holbrook, Damon Herriman & a nearly unrecognizable Norman Reedus as members of the outfit.

    Well made film
Starting with the cast - incredible. Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Austin Butler all became their characters and really carried the film for me. Jodie Comer is probably deserving a nomination for her work, amazing midwest accent and a true chameleon of an actress.

This was an interesting movie, based off of a photographers work following a bike gang around in the late 60s-70s. The music, fashion and set were really fun and immediately took you to another time. We were in Chicago in the 60s and I believed it. Overall the film had a pretty slow and steady pace to it. It wasn't jammed packed with action or a film where you are sitting on the edge of your seat, but a character movie where you pick up on innuendos and themes throughout and they slowly chip away at you until the end. Thats due to great acting, editing and writing.

I was never bored, but I was also never blown away. I was content though-out knowing this was a good movie but not my favorite. I think its definitely a good one to see to be entertained for 2 hours and think about how society views biker gangs and how maybe those stereotypes get to peoples heads and make them act according to the role we put them in or not. Either way, its good acting and filmmaking.
