coreyjpier - 28 June 2024 Terrible "Wonka" promised to be a magical prequel to the beloved "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," but unfortunately, it falls flat in almost every aspect. The film attempts to delve into the origins of the eccentric chocolatier, but instead of a rich backstory, we get a half-baked plot that lacks the charm and whimsy of the original.
The casting of the young Willy Wonka is perhaps the biggest misstep. The actor's performance feels forced and lacks the quirky charisma that Gene Wilder and even Johnny Depp brought to the role. The supporting characters are forgettable, and their interactions with Wonka feel contrived and uninspired.
Visually, the movie tries too hard to be fantastical, resulting in a cluttered and overwhelming aesthetic. The special effects are overdone, making the chocolate factory look more like a chaotic amusement park than a place of wonder. The musical numbers, which should have been a highlight, are disappointingly bland and do little to advance the story or develop the characters.
The script is another major letdown. The dialogue is often cringe-worthy, filled with clichés and awkward attempts at humor that rarely land. The plot meanders without a clear direction, making it difficult to stay engaged. The film's attempt to provide a deeper understanding of Wonka's motivations and dreams feels shallow and unconvincing.
Overall, "Wonka" is a missed opportunity. It fails to capture the magic and heart of its predecessors, leaving audiences with a bitter aftertaste. Fans of the original would be better off rewatching the classic than wasting their time on this disappointing prequel.
IceCream-57 - 3 June 2024 Wonka This was a good film overall. Those of us that grew up watching the original, seeing this remake was very fun and exciting. The film takes place in Europe and it is centered around a very good hearted young man that is quite frankly broke. Broke, with a good heart, a love for people, and big dreams of starting his own chocolate business and expanding the product. His mom influenced him at a young age with chocolate then she passed away. But he has some people that are standing in his way like a mean spirited police officer. But he does meet some friends along the way. I would recommend this film adventure film.
