    Compelling and Troubling
Sound of Freedom (2023) is an effective and affecting film. It is a fictionalized account of efforts by dedicated Homeland Security enforcement officer Tim Ballard (Jim Caviezel) who risked everything to rescue fifty-four children from sex trafficking in Columbia.

Having seen interviews with Ballard and Caviezel, I already knew the story and tend to be skeptical of bio-pics which often exaggerate and glamorize, but usually have slow spots because real life doesn't conform to popular dramatic arcs. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The film is well made, suspenseful, and credible.

The climax and denouement are well crafted; however, rather than imparting a feeling of joy, it leaves a sense of relief, tempered by despair that the children were rescued, but irreparably injured, and that the fifty-four are only a small percentage of those victimized, not only by criminal organizations, but by relatives, teachers, classmates, and random strangers.

little problems over and over again
In Honduras, Roberto Aguilar gets tricked and his two young children are kidnapped by sex slavers. In America, Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard (Jim Caviezel) is a veteran of fighting child pornography. One case gets inside the weary cop and he heads off to Columbia to find Roberto's daughter. He joins up with local activist Vampiro (Bill Camp) and they come up with a massive sting operation.

I'm leaving accuracy to other critics. This movie is simply too tiring. It's hitting the nail on the head over and over again. Listen, children being sexually exploited is not an easy watch. This movie is uncomfortable at a base level. Then, Caviezel is doing his sad puppy face acting and his one cry-talk scene is annoying. It is a lot. I like Bill Camp's character, but even he annoys me a little with his first scene. Over and over again, I kept thinking that I could write better dialogue than this. I don't want that as I watch my movies. In a small example, Giselle asks Paulo what he wants. The obvious implication is what kind of child sex. The only good comeback is money. He could accentuate how much money everybody is going to make. The writing is simply not good enough.

Finally, the island rescue is the perfect climax. Despite its many little problems, I was still going with this movie expecting a good third act on the island could save it. Then the island rescue falls a little flat and the movie decides to do a whole different rescue in the jungle. The premise doesn't work to begin with. It is anti-climatic and it becomes a real grind to watch. This movie is badly done. There is a good movie in here. It needs writers who want to write a good movie rather than be cheerleaders for the lead character.
