    Top Actors Galore but...
Ok, so I read a few reviews and I rail against most of them. Good points are the actors, top notch, great performances but.... I was agitated by Costner's character. He was much too passive, much too slow to the draw and not too involved in controlling the situation even when he and his wife's life were on the line. Most guys would plot out some sort of strategy very quickly then execute but not Costner in this movie. In the end, Costner got shot twice leaving his wife, Diane Lane to fend for herself..Not a choice move. In the end, I was irritated enough to keep watching..decent movie, really. I just wish Costner's character was much more protective and even when he had a gun in his law enforcement hand he simply just did not pull the trigger..

For me: Big problem with Diane Lane's Acting
Am I the only one who think Lane seems incapable of nuance, subtlety, or inner intensity? I couldn't get over how her scenes had the emotional intensity of cardboard. I seem to be in a minority here. Granted the film has a stillness to it, at least for many passages. Perhaps because her character is so entirely unlikeable, she had more work to do to make the viewer care about her and her actions. She couldn't pull it off. Another problem: the use of a Native American character to move the plot, but in the most unfortunate way. An old screen writer friend of mine (no longer with us) once said that the studios told him that if the plot dragged, add a black detective. He said that as a critical aside to point out Hollywood's racism. I think we see that in play with this film. Decades later.
