BadRoosevelt - 23 June 2024 Buoyant romantic comedy overcomes abrasive protagonist It's been a long time since I've seen a film that ends up being such a winningly wholesome romantic comedy that succeeds notwithstanding an unsympathetic main character. When a film has to overcome that kind of hurdle, it becomes that much more admirable in its achievement. Thunderously profane but also deeply humane, this film's a winner in its genre.
A podcast author, who has struggled to find a lasting relationship and often feels alienated by the dating scene, chances to meet a high-powered white-shoe attorney whose dashing looks and rugged charisma sweep him off his feet. At first, they seem like an odd couple but as they get to know each other, their erstwhile commitment phobia starts to melt away and they think about a real future together.
The protagonist, played by Billy Eichner, is not exactly your everyman. Awkward, ungainly and full of unarticulated bitterness in his early middle age, he makes for an unlikely rooting interest. But his struggle with love and the dynamics of a new relationship are so utterly real that we're able to forget how disagreeable he is and hope for his happiness all the same. Gladly recommended for those who enjoy an uplifting romance.
therzog-553-799739 - 18 October 2023 unwatchable For context: I'm a gay man, and every now and then I enjoy a romcom. I figured that I might be the target demographic for this film. If I am a part of that target demographic, all I can say is holy sweet mother Mary and Joseph... No, no, no, no, no to this movie.
I tried to watch this a few months ago, and it is still on my mind. The characters were hollow and deeply unlikeable, and the plot and script were so incredibly dull.
It's rare for me to turn off a movie before the end, but at the 60 min mark I couldn't tolerate one more second of this nonsense.
Why? Why was this movie made? There must be more interesting queer stories to tell.
